"I will not leave," said Alice.
"Besides, that is not a real rule."
"It is the oldest rule in the book," said the King.
"Then it should be Rule Number One," said Alice.
The King turned pale.
"Consider your verdict," he said to the jury.
"There is more evidence!" said the White Rabbit.
"This paper was just found."
"What is in it?" asked the Queen.
"I have not opened it yet," said the Rabbit.
"It looks like a letter from the prisoner."
"It must be," said the King.
"Unless it was written to nobody."
"Who is it addressed to?" asked a juror.
"It is not addressed to anyone," said the Rabbit.
"There is nothing on the outside."
The Rabbit opened the paper.
"It is not a letter," he said.
"It is a set of verses."
"Are they in the prisoner's handwriting?" asked the King.
"No, they are not," said the Rabbit.
"He must have copied someone else's writing," said the King.
"I did not write it!" said the Knave.
"There is no name signed at the end."
"That makes it worse," said the King.
"You must have meant to cause trouble."
"That proves his guilt!" said the Queen.
"It proves nothing!" said Alice.
