It was her own tears!
She had cried so much when she was nine feet tall.
Now she was swimming in the pool of her own tears.
"I wish I hadn't cried so much!" she said.
"Now I might drown in my own tears!"
"How silly that would be!"
She heard splashing nearby and swam closer to look.
At first she thought it was a big animal like a hippo.
Then she saw it was just a little mouse.
It had fallen into the pool just like her.
"Maybe I can talk to this mouse," she thought.
"Everything is strange down here."
"Perhaps it can talk too."
"Oh Mouse, do you know the way out of this pool?"
The Mouse looked at her but did not speak.
"Maybe it doesn't understand English," she thought.
"Maybe it's a French mouse."
"Where is my cat?" she said in French.
The Mouse jumped up in terror!
It was shaking all over with fear.
"Oh, I'm so sorry!" said Alice.
"I forgot that mice don't like cats."
"Would you like cats if you were a mouse?" asked the Mouse angrily.
"No, I suppose not," said Alice softly.
"I promise I won't talk about cats anymore."
"Let's swim to the shore," said the Mouse.
"Then I will tell you my story."
"You will understand why I hate cats and dogs."
The pool was getting crowded now.
Many birds and animals had fallen in.
There was a Duck, a Dodo, a Lory, and an Eaglet.
Alice led the way, and they all swam to the shore together.
